79. Демидовский столп / Demidov's pillar
Знаменитый Демидовский столп - обелиск в честь 100-летия горнозаводского дела на Алтае, возведённый на Демидовской площади. Собственно, после установки обелиска площадь и получила это название, а до тех пор звалась Конюшенной. Предложение о возведении обелиска выдвинул в 1818 году начальник Канцелярии Колывано-Воскресенских заводов Пётр Козьмич Фролов, первый камень был заложен 18 июня 1825 года, а окончательно постройка завершилась в 1839. Столп сложен из 12 блоков серого гранита и изначально имел в высоту 14 метров. Прообразом столпа послужил петербургский обелиск в честь побед графа П.А. Румянцева. В 1918 году город едва не лишился одной из самых приметных своих вех - обелиск хотели разобрать, перенести в другое место и сделать из него памятник погибшим за дело революции, однако, после первых попыток решили с гранитом не связываться.
The famous Demidov's pillar - an obelisk in honor of the 100th anniversary of the mining business in the Altai, installed on Demidov's Square. Actually, square received its name after the installation of the obelisk, and until then was called the Stables Square. The proposal for the installation of the obelisk was put forward in 1818 by the head of district of Kolyvano-Voskresensk factories Petr Kozmich Frolov, the first stone was laid on 18 June 1825, and finally the building was completed in 1839. The pillar is made of 12 blocks of gray granite and initially had a height of 14 meters. Obelisk in St. Petersburg in honor of victories of count P. A. Rumyantsev served as the prototype of Demidov's pillar. In 1918, the town was close to losing one of its most noticeable landmarks - the obelisk was wanted to disassemble, move to another place and make from it a monument to those who died for the cause of revolution, however, after the first attempts have decided not to deal with granite.
